BARKLEY IS BARKING SOME MORE
Former NBA allstar Charles Barkley is running his mouth again. He recently told a minority health conference that blacks should stop blaming racism for their problems and work harder to improve their communities.
"It"'s too easy to blame white people. We're killing ourselves," Barkley told the mostly black audience of about 400 community activists and medical professionals Friday. "We just got to do better.
He spoke at the first UAB Minority Health and Research Center Conference. A former star for Auburn University and the NBA, Barkley attacked a host of social problems in the black community - drugs, crime, single-parent families and teen pregnancy. Mostly, he said, blacks need to use some sense.
"If you're working at Wal-Mart and have 10 kids, quit having kids," he said. Barkley conceded that his approach might be a little abrasive.
"I know sometimes I make people mad," Barkley told The Birmingham News. "But people get over it."
